Getting Around

Transportation in Cebu

What to Expect

Getting around an urban/rural jungle such as Cebu can be such as hassle if you don't know your way. if you're the hardcore traveler, you'll have fun in the chaotic transport system that Cebu has to offer( Though way better than what Manila and probably India have). However, if you're like travelers that comes from first and second world countries, then you'll probably be disgusted with the system to the point you might be discourage to go around Cebu instead.

But please don't.

Cebu with all its marvels have a lot to offer to travelers that muster enough courage to go around the island[read other sections why]. Hopefully with this guide you'll have no problems finding and squeezing your way around.

Things to note when you're on the road driving, riding or walking

  1. Cebu, like most other regions in the country have a different way of looking at traffic lights. Here Green means "go fast" , Yellow means " go faster!", while Red means " You have 5 seconds to step on it!" So don't be surprise when you see a red light, and cars are still passing you by.
  2. Majority don't follow the pedestrian lane and often jay walk. if you're driving( if you're new to the Philippines, i suggest you don't), be careful of these people.
  3. Everyone swerves in traffic.
  4. Unlike most countries where honking your car's horn is seen as a sign of rudeness, in Cebu, its totally normal, and sometimes even encouraged to avoid accidents. Cars honk their horn to let pedestrians and cars changing lane that it is coming.
  5. Better to be a defensive driver when driving the streets of Cebu, side mirrors are often side by side to other cars in times of heavy traffic.
  6. Jeepneys, a major public transportation in the Philippines (See futher notes) will just stop at the side or even at the center of the road when they see a passenger wanting to ride.
  7. Peak hours are from 7 to 10 am in the mornings and 4 to 8 in the evenings.

Better watch out for people like him, jaywalking even though there is clearly a skywalk right behind him.

Resorts in Cordova

Cordova Reef Village Resort

Cordova Reef Village Resort in Cordova is one of the older resort in the area. Its a hugeresort, that caters to the more money spending tourists rather than the mass public.

It sits on a four hectare property of lush green, and a gigantic swimming pool. There are a lot of activities in the resort ranging from snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, and other

water sports. Although, the resort looks relaxing, and promising,  there are mix feedbacks regarding the place. Trip advisors notes that the place don't tell you what the

surcharges are(the ++) until you realized when you're checking out that you are paying a hefty amount. This left a lot of past travelers disappointed and angry with management not resolving this issue. Moreover,  some traverlers noted that the beach is

also not "swimmable"  especially during low tide, when the distance between sea level and natural ground is just ankle deep.

Coco Palms Resort Danao

coco palms resort danao

Relatively a new resort in Danao, Danao Coco Palms Resort just had its opening last May 2010. Even then, the resort has been getting a lot of positive feedback-probably because of its large area or the swimming pool right at the center of the resort. The beach part of the resort is quite interesting since the moment you step out of the "beach area" , you are instantly on the deep parts of the water. So easy to say its a great place for snorkeling. The food isn't cheap but i heard it tastes good. Entrance fee is 150 pesos per adult and overnight rooms is priced at 1980.  Average food price is around 150-170 pesos per person.

The resort is located just along the coastal highway right before Danao City Proper. A good 30 minute ride from Cebu City Proper and around 45 mins from Mactan International Airport.

Cebu Hotels

Where to Stay in Cebu?

At a hotel?duh. I'm kidding. Seriously though, there are a lot of hotels/pension houses/motels to choose from in Cebu. With the urban hotels being the more expensive ones, and pension houses being the cheapest( unless of course you have a relative in cebu, which probably is the cheapest of accommodations.).  For the sake of price comparison, i'll divide the accommodations into three tiers, with 1 being the most expensive and three being the cheapest. Tier 1 hotels would go to Marriott Hotel Cebu, Waterfront Hotel, Marco Polo, Parklane. Marriott charges around 5500 a night,  with Waterfront charging around 4900, Marco Polo 4700, and Parklane a little less with around 4300. Keep in mind these are published rates so if you're a long staying guest, you might get a bigger discount. Tier 2 hotels would go to Crown Regency, Cebu Midtown, Montebello Hotel, and Rajah Hotel. These hotels charge between the rates of 2000-4000 pesos. Locations for these hotels are at a prime area, especially when you look at fuente being the "center" of Cebu. Tier 3 hotels would go to Metropark hotel, Hotel Asia, La Guardia, and Grand Prix Hotel. These hotels charge between 800-2000 pesos a night, and their locations are in the inner roads with the exception of Grand Prix Hotel, which by far in my opinion have the best location among them.

"Other" Nightlife in Cebu

What happens in Cebu, should stay in Cebu

Cebu's red light is not that big compared to its other South East Asian counterparts, because of the fact that as a Catholic country, these things are seen as a taboo. Even then, Cebu does have areas in which these bars, gentlemen's club, and massage parlors converge.
