Speaking Cebuano 7 (Have/Don't Have) Featured

In this lesson, you can learn how to say you have something or something exists in Cebuano/ Bisaya/Visayan. In English we usually say "I have" or "There is" (e.g. "I have water", " There is water") to express

that "something" exists or it is there, and "Don't have" or "There is no" to express the opposite. In Cebuano, we use the words "Naa", or "Wala" to describe if the object or person you are referring to is there or not.

" NAA"  and " WALA"

When you want to talk about what people HAVE/DON’T HAVE, and also about things that EXISTS/DOESN’T EXIST, you can use these expressions.

Using "NAA" (Prounounced as Na-a)

If you are talking about someone or something existing in a specific place, it means “to be”

Ex) I am here. / You are there/ There is water.

If you are talking about something (or someone in some cases) in your possession, it means “to have”

Ex) I have a brother. / I have you in my life.

" NAA"

Because we know from previous lessons that Cebuano has a Verb Subject Object Agreement,

ex.

1. Naa ko(I) diri(here) = I'm Here

2. Naa si John sa balay. = John is in the house.

For Objects, we add a "y" to "Naa" and thus it sounds like " Na-ay(ay is prounounced as "I" )"

3. Naay tubig?(water) = Is there Water? / Do you have water?

4. Naay hangin(wind) sa bukid(mountain)= There is wind at the mountains

5. Naa si Pedro karon sa langit(heaven).= Pedro is in heaven right now

6. Naay(There is/are) daghan plato(lot of plates) sa salug.(on the floor) = There are a lot of plates on the floor.

" WALA"

Wala is the opposite of NAA, thus if you want to negate NAA and say that something does not exists or you don't have it. Then you say "Wala"

ex.

1. Wala ko(I) diri(here) = I'm not Here

2. Wala si John sa balay. = John is not in the house.

For Objects, we add a "y" to "Naa" and thus it sounds like " Na-ay(ay is prounounced as "I" )"

3. Walay tubig?(water) = Is there no Water? / Don't you have water?

4. Walay hangin(wind) sa bukid(mountain)= There is no wind at the mountains

5. Wala si Pedro karon sa langit(heaven).= Pedro is not in heaven right now

6. Walay(There is/are) daghan plato(lot of plates) sa salug.(on the floor) = There are not a lot of plates on the floor.
