Eating in Cebu

Puso

Ahhh! The lifeblood of all that is Cebuano. Puso( pronounced with a hard accent on the "so"), though in Filipino may also mean heart, is actually a heart-like shaped coconut-weaved container for rice(refer to the picture). Very popular in the Visayas especially in Cebu because aside from it being very mobile ( anyone can eat a puso and pork barbeque while walking), its not that expensive when you're on a budget. Moreover its actually tasty when you pair it with "combo foods" such as barbequePuso or Hanging Rice and ngo hiong. With sauces such as soy and vinegar and "ngo hiong sauce", one can never go wrong with Puso. A Puso can cost you around 2 to 5 pesos depending on the size. Puso are usually found on pungko pungko or in carenderias all around Cebu.  Here is a video from onesizefilipinodish in youtube on how a puso is made.

Ngohiong

Ngohiong and Puso

Probably the most unique dish you could find in Cebu, Ngo-hiong is undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best-worth-for-your-money dish Cebu has to offer. At a measly price on around 5-10 pesos, Ngo-hiongs can go a long way in making one's stomach full and happy. Ngo hiong is a a kind of lumpia roll that consists mainly of coconut "meat" and some vegetables like cabbage and carrots. As it is cheap, it does not have meat in it. It is deep fried to a golden crisp and is dipped with a special spicy ngohiong sauce that only God knows where and how its made(thats why it taste so good). Coupled with Puso, a typical ngo hiong meal can cost you only around 20-30 pesos. Thats bargain for you.

Lechon

Lechon is by far the first thing that comes to people's head when they talk about Cebu. Derived from the spanish word leche(milk), lechon refers to a suckling pig roasted to perfection- Crisp on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside. In other parts of the country, lechons are dipped in special liver sauce and soy sauce, however in Cebu, this is usually not the case. Since the lechon should taste undeniably delicious, no sauce is required and is seen as an insult to the pride of Cebuanos if seen done in such.Though eaten mostly during special occassions such as birthday, weddings, and festivals, lechon can also be eaten in eateries in malls and other restaurants. Popular lechon establishments are Kangs, and CNT.  One can find CNT's main store near SM City Cebu. Lines are pretty long, so make sure you go early to get the best parts.
